Small World Fair: Favourite Sounds - Southend

Stuart and I collaborated with sound artist Peter Cusack on his project for the Small World Fair exhibition at the Digital Exploration Centre, a Southend version of his 'Favourite Sounds' project. This originated in London in 1998 and has since been carried out in Chicago, Beijing, Prague and Manchester. The long-term idea is to build up a comprehensive picture of what people feel about the sounds of their cities, how they effect us individually and how city soundscapes differ from one another.

There are crossovers between 'Favourite Sounds' and our Southend version of Vibe Cube where residents of Southend were invited to submit both recordings and ideas for recordings which reflect the history, character, and the unique feel of their area, resulting in one hundred and fifty collected and donated sounds from the Southend Borough. Selected recordings from this collection were used alongside Peter's own recordings made for the project.

During the exhibition a series of panel-led discussions with artists, activists, business leaders and academics debate technology, its impact and implications for progress and society; the 'Listening to our World' event on Wed 13 Oct. 7.30pm featured Peter "expanding on some of the development of the 'Favourite Sounds' work. In particular he will discuss sound and his recording work with examples from all over the world. Damien Robinson and Stuart Bowditch then respond to Peter's presentation. Both artists have worked with sound in unique ways." See below for DEC information
